Be mindful . . .

Be Mindful

Be mindful of what you think;
     your thoughts will be spoken.

Be mindful of what you speak;
     your words become action.

Be mindful of what you do;
     your deeds reveal your character.

Be mindful of who you are
     and discover the fate you have created.

~ paraphrased from a lesson learned.

Had I kept some notes on this poem’s origin, I might be able to recall the lesson it was paraphrased from. As it is, it will just have to stand on its own.

  1. Karen says:

    Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience.
    It isn’t more complicated that that.
    It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

  2. Peter says:

    Hey Karen,

    There’s much wisdom in how you perceive mindfulness.

    For me, I think of being mindful as more than accepting or receiving or opening. There is also an element of seeking, of curiosity. Not just to open yourself, but to invite, to turn your mind upon that which arises, with a desire to see its true nature without concern, as you note for pleasantness or unpleasantness, or other desired outcomes. To be mindful is to accept, but it is also to observe.
