A dream is a place where a wish and a fear meet. When the wish and the fear are exactly the same, we call the dream a nightmare.

I love this passage from the spectacularly enthralling Shantaram. Nonetheless, I disagree with it.
When the wish and the fear are exactly the same, you have found the way to an innermost desire you’ve long been blocking yourself from achieving. It’s not a nightmare; it’s your path. Such a dream is a light beckoning you to self-understanding.
Earlier in the book:
I was thinking about another type of river, one that runs through any one of us, no matter where we come from, all over the world. It’s the river of the heart, and the heart’s desire. It’s the pure essential truth of what each one of us is, and can achieve.

When you are too fearful to follow the flow of that river, then your life will be in disarray. When you impose a course for that river, then you will be constantly fighting the current of your life.
