To be, acknowledge you are

Becoming is not Being

Becoming is not Being

To be loved, love.
To be forgiven, forgive.

To be happy, choose happiness.
To be wealthy, acknowledge the wealth you possess.
To be successful, measure the love in your life, not its deeds.
To end violence, offer peace.

To receive, give.
To be wise, live.

Roger Ebert ~ Discovering Kindness

Roger Ebert ~ Kindness made him happy.

Roger Ebert ~ Kindness made him happy.

Roger Ebert died, yesterday, ‘after an extended battle with cancer’ as they say. Except, as with many who find grace along the journey to life’s end, Ebert appears to have instead taken cancer’s hand and walked with it into the darkness of oblivion he did not fear. That grace is evident in I Do Not Fear Death, an article he penned for Salon well back in 2011, and nowhere is it more evident to me than in this passage from the article:

It ain’t all buttons and charts, little albatross. Know what the first rule of flying is? Well I s’pose you do, since you already know what I’m ’bout to say.

Child of darkness ~ entering the gateway to all understanding

Yin & Yang :: Child of Darkness - Child of Light

Yin Yang

Darkness. One of the most compelling forces, and metaphors, we have. Darkness fascinates me. Here are a few snippets from an online conversation I participated in some time ago, beginning with a quote, then Anabele’s response to it, followed by my reply.

In a profound sense every man has two halves to his being; he is not one person so much as two persons trying to act in unison. I believe that in the heart of each human being there is something which I can only describe as a “child of darkness” who is equal and complementary to the more obvious “child of light.”
~ Laurens van der Post
Of course, we try to fight the child of darkness all the time….. good against evil so to speak
~ Anabela
I’m not sure van der Post thinks of this “child of darkness” as evil. The way it’s phrased, he sounds like an Eastern mystic, something like a Daoist.

A Gradual Awakening ~ breathe yourself to sleep.

It’s tempting to make a big thing of this, tie it into other spiritual work, but it’s just a simple technique for overcoming insomnia I’ve shared with dozens of people. No drugs. No warm milk. No visits to a sleep clinic. There are side benefits, and it’s based on an ancient spiritual practice, but you don’t need to know all that if all you want is to simply, finally, fall asleep. So let’s just get on with it.

First, make your bedroom and bed comfortable. Clean sheets are nice. A glass of water on the bedside table. Some fresh flowers in the room. Some gentle, light music — preferably, instrumental — playing softly. Best if it’s a short playlist, or you can set the playback device to ‘sleep’ in a half hour, just so music won’t wake you 3 hours into sleep. Posted above is the playlist I’ve been using for nearly a year now.

Or none of that. It’s not necessary. All that is necessary is to breathe, and to hold a simple conversation with your mind.
